    Document Library and UNC

I am VERY new to Sharepoint.  I just installed it the other day and am setting up/configuring everything now.  We are trying to take our existing intranet and port it over to Sharepoint.

We currently have documents for all the departments on a Network Share located on a SAN.  Is there anyway to set up a Document Library that points to  UNC path, so everything can remain where it is AND be accessed through Sharepoint?

    Re: Document Library and UNC

All documents that are contained in Document Libraries are housed in the content databases. The way to accomplish your task might be to use a web part that displays the files located in the network share. This way, users can go to SharePoint to access the documents, but they still remain on the file system.

It's good to see you are considering keeping your data on the share server. Too many novice implementers are thinking of SharePoint as a file share on steroids and just dumping all their content in. If your file share is working for you, point to and then use SharePoint for the communication and collaboration on new document management and document-centric process workflows.

cdpi, I believe you have misunderstood what I stated. My response to douga's question was to use a page viewer web part that just points to the existing file share.

Of course, this will give no collaboration, versions, ability to approve changes, etc.
