    Help Please with Search Function

I would like to ask for some advise on something that has me stumped.  I am pretty new to SharePoint but I have been doing pretty good I think so far, but I have something that has me stumped.

The regular Search box at the top of the page seems to have stopped working and I don't know why.  The search box that I am talking about is the regular one that sits above the Site Actions tag and comes with the out of the box templates.

So I have many pages with document libraries and within those libraries I have documents.  (Lots of documents as the purpose of this SharePoint is a Company Wide Process Library).  So I should be able to go to that search box and once I navigate to one of the pages that have the documents I want to find I should be able to select "This Site: xxxx" from the left box and then type the document that I am looking for in the right hand box (I will use purple pickles for this example) and it should find all documents on that page that have "Purple Pickles" in the title right?

Right now I get back a No Results Found, when I am plainly looking at 5 documents that I specifically put in the document library on that page with that title just to test the search engine.  I tested the attributes to ensure they were correct via the name and title so the search engine should be able to find it.

What am I doing wrong?  Please help this is driving me insane....which could be a short trip at this point.  Tongue Tied

Hi. We had the same problem, and finally traced it to the Search Visibility setting under Site Administration. We had fine grained permissions on the site, and as a result search weren't showing up for all users. We changed the setting to "Always index all ASP pages on this site" and the search started producing results. You might give this  atry.

Thank you MichaelRay for the idea.  I tried your suggestion as it seemed that we could have that same problem.  But it did not change the result.

I have special permissions as well so I did some reading and I do agree that I should have the setting to "Always indes all ASPX pages on this site" so I have now gone through all my sites and corrected that setting.  I was really hoping that this would solve the issue, but it didn't.  I think I still have something else wrong.

I do appreciate you giving me one thing that I needed to fix though.  Big Smile

Maybe your site is not getting crawled properly. Check your event logs for errors, as well as the search logs to see if there are any errors...

Yes, definitely check your search crawler for errors and make sure that crawls are being conducted on a regular basis.

Re: Help Please with Search Function

    Hi Shellih,

I'm wondering if you got a solution to your problem?

I've recently started in a position where Sharepoint (MOSS 2007 on W2003) is setup, and it's my job to administer it so I've got loads of questions. I've created a number of new sites and document libraries, but none of the documents created within these are coming up in search. I've also set "Always index all ASPX pages on this site", but don't know how to check if these sites are being crawled.

The documents include both word and infopath forms, so I thought at least the infopath data should have been searchable.

Documents that have been on the site for some time can be found through the search which is even more confusing to me. I've been searching as both the site admin and a standard user.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone has any ideas, or where I can find the log files / settings to check the crawls are working.

    Thanks

    Sam

Hi I was just wondering how you get the search in the top right corner to return people results.  Because right now when I search for someones name I get everything in the site that is related to them but not their personal person card.

    Thanks

There's a drop down box next to the text box for search. Make sure it's on "People" and not "All Sites." If that People Search isn't working then...

Inside of Shared Services Admin, go to Search Settings -> Content sources and crawl schedules -> Local Office Sharepoint Server sites.

Under the Start Addresses text area, enter in "sps3://mysites/" after the other URLs already in there.

I think that the "mysites" part of the address depends on the name of your mysites.

    Amuro Ray,

That drop down box says "This Site: my site" and then the other option in the drop down is related sites.  How do I get the options of "All Sites" and "People."  Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

Also I have implemented a people search webpart on the site.  For some reason though it only finds a few people in the company not all of them.  It only finds about 5 people out of 30 that I have listed on the site so far.  Any ideas as to why this might be would helpful as well.

    Thanks again

Re: Help Please with Search Function

In reply to your first post, I'm thinking you have a different configuration from mine. Do you have My Sites enabled? I'm thinking that this People Search ties into that. I could be wrong about that but that's I've gathered.

For the second post, what is your search query? Are you searching against a category? For example, is your search query "Department: Finance"? This means you are searching the Department category for all that matches Finance. If you're only getting a few that means, they fall outside of that search query. To look at people's profiles and edit them, go to Shared Services Admin. Then go to User Profiles and Properties -> View User Profiles. You should get a list of people who have profiles. Click on a name and you can edit the fields for that person. You'll be able to add them to the Finance Department if you think they belong there. Another thing, if you have it set up so that it does automatic import through Active Directory, some of your changes may get overridden. That depends if the field that you are changing is mapped.

Also, keep in mind that the People Core Search Results are only limited to 50 results.

Ok I got my people search to work now.  The only problem is it returns the person twice.  If I type in Joe then Joe Smith's card comes up twice.  Any idea as to why this might be?

Also is the any way to get it to recognize Matt if the person's name is Matthew?

    Thanks

all site search in moss returns no results

Hi. I´m having a similar problem. The search in all sites doesn´t return any results. I don´t know why, the indexing state in Search Definitions, on Shared Services is in State: Inactive . My service is running on the server. The user account has all rights in the database server, all seems to be configured and still getting no results.

    Any help.???
