How can I use v2 Sharepoint (WSS 2.0) to update data in external databases?

The Data View Web Part works fine for displaying data from external data sources like SQL Server, but what if you want to update (and insert and delete) data in an external database?  Microsoft says the Database Interface Wizard won't work in a Sharepoint site, so we should use the Data View.  I've been looking all over for a way to use the Data View to edit data, with no luck.  Has anyone come up with a way to do this?  And no, I'm not an ASP.NET developer.

We had pretty good success using the Data View Web Part and Stored Procedures. You can pass data into the SP and have it do pretty much anything you want.

    Jeremy,

I tried plugging in a SP for entering data, but the DataView web part has nothing in it.  Do you have any examples of how you did this that I could look at?  I'm puzzled; there seems to be almost nothing on the Microsoft site related to using DataView to update, insert or delete data.

     Thanks,

I could insert data into external database like SQL 2005 but could not update data using SPD 2007.

Do anyone has any idea how could I do that?

    Thanks in advance.

There is a setting in central admin.... operations... Data Configuration... Data Retreival service...  you must enable "Enable update query support".

Ok, now perhaps you can share with me how you got inserts to work, I'm pulling my hair out.  Did you use a data view web part?  How do you activate the query?  Please , this one is going to kill me.
