Backup Problems: Object WSS_Search_MYSERVER failed in event OnBackup

    Hi all,

I'm trying to backup my SharePoint server via a Full Backup with the native backup tools (Admin -> Operations -> Perform backup) But I get:

    Requested By SharePoint\spmgr
Phase Completed with errors, please refer to the log file for details.
    Start Time 3/31/2008 9:37 AM
    Finish Time 3/31/2008 9:50 AM
    Top Component Farm
    Backup ID fe962ec3-e09f-4c71-ad42-d378a918f069
    Directory \\mxmex-sto02\COMMON_DOCS\SharePointBackup\spbr0003\
    Backup Method Full
    Warnings 0
    Errors 7
Failure Message Object WSS_Search_MXMEX-SP01 failed in event OnBackup. For more information, see the error log located in the backup directory.

In the detailed error message I've found "Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)"

I don't know what to do now. Pls advice!!!!

     Thanks a lot.

I believe this means that search services aren't enabled and therefore can't be backed up.  Try a backup from the command line and it that works you're good.  That command is:

    stsadm -o backup -url http://%your_server% -filename %your backup location%

You can find more about stsadm by Googling it as well.

    Good luck

    Hi Karuana,

Thanks for your repy. I have tried with stsadm command line tool and I was successfull to backup site collection but I would like to use the navite tool on SharePoint admin because I need to backup my configuration database, web applications and any content databases on  my server farm. I know this can be done by SQL tools but because I would like to use the automate process via a batch file as MS suggests at http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/07786f8b-3abe-444f-9c10-54047b8f9ab31033.mspx?mfr=true

I have read the log file and found a line telling: Error: Object SharePoint_Config failed in event OnBackup.
SqlException: Cannot open backup device '\\mxmex-sto02\COMMON_DOCS\SharePointBackup\spbr0004\00000011.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).

I have made sure and double checked that this shared folder has full control for the admin account doing the backup.

I don't know how to proceed.

    Thanks

Any update on this? I just tried backing up my new farm and came across the same error. I could try stsadm but I'd prefer to know that everything is working properly before using workarounds this early in the installation.

    Thanks!

Hi, I haven't addressed this issue. A SharePoint consultant told me I should apply updates and fixes to my server. I haven't had time to do so.

    Regards,

Hi, I just recently had to deal with a issue simlar to yours in two very distinct environment; and basically the only couple of advice for you to troubleshoot your situation is as follows:

     1. UNC PATH--> make you're using \\servername\backup_Folder)

     2. SHARE--> make sure that the folder mention above is shared, and the "domain\application_pool", and "domain\ssp_service account for the farm or web application as: FULL Permision for both the SHARE and NTFS. There are many options of setting this up; however, the bottom line is getting this two  accounts the neccessary rights.

PS: For kicks, you might want to give "EVERYONE" account in the share permission "FULL" control.

     Good Luck.
