I think I stumbled onto a fix to access the Home page - - - Opened the site in SharePoint Designer 2007 and opened default.aspx. The Web Part causing the problem is displayed in the Design area (apparently it's the Site Registration Web Part) with an error message 'Error rendering Web Part'...

Don't think delete, think hide To hide a specific template, you modify the Hidden parameter of that template in the Webtemp.xml file.
